Jim Fletcher taught for 11 years in New South Wales government schools after which he worked for over two decades as an education historian in the history unit of the New South Wales Department of Education. With Jan Burnswoods he is the co-author of two books: Sydney and the Bush: A Pictorial History of Education in New South Wales and Government Schools of New South Wales Since 1848 and the author of River, Road and Rail: A History of Kogarah Municipality Clean, Clad and Courteous: A History of Aboriginal Education in New South Wales Documents in the History of Aboriginal Education in New South Wales
