Copyright

Copyright is legal ownership of the material produced. In Australia, the moment you create a new work, whether it be written, painted, sculpted, played etc, you own the copyright in that work. For Australian writers, there is no need to pay for any registration of your work, your copyright in the work exists from the moment you ‘put pen to paper’. However, you need to be careful not to infringe the work of others when creating new works which draw on previously existing works. If in doubt, visit the Copyright Agency’s website at http://www.copyright.com.au/

DRM

Digital rights management. DRM restricts where a book can be sold and can tie it to a particular machine or reading device. IndieMosh publishes books which are DRM-free. It is our opinion that if people really want a copy of your book badly enough, DRM won’t stop them. Also, if someone purchases a new device, they may wish to transfer your book from their old one to their new one - and DRM could stop them from doing this.

Ebook

A book which is created with specific intent that it be read onscreen, either on a conventional computer or on a dedicated device such as an iPad, Kindle, or other tablet, or a smart phone.

epub

Epub ebooks are those which are usually read on iPads, smart phones, Kobo ereading devices, Barnes and Noble’s NOOK ereading devices etc. They can be read on computers and smart phones using free downloadable software from Kobo, Stanza and a variety of other ereader interface manufacturers.

Imprint page

This is the page which usually follows the first title page of a print book, and includes details of the book: the title, subtitle, author name, ISBN, publishing and reprinting dates, publishing details, etc

ISBN

Stands for International Standard Book Number. You can purchase your own ISBNs from https://www.myidentifiers.com.au/ if you wish your book to be published and recorded under your own imprint, or we will happily allocate MoshPit Publishing ISBNs to your book.

Kindle

Amazon’s hardware or device and apps for reading Kindle ebooks bought from Amazon, or else in .mobi format. The Kindle comes in several different styles, including plain black-and-white paperless ink, and colour touch screens. Visit www.amazon.com for more information on the Kindle ereading device.

PoD

Print on demand. The book is not printed until someone purchases it. This wonderful concept, made affordable by modern printing technology, saves trees, ink, carbon, transport and waste and makes it possible for almost anyone to publish a book.
